Lime for pulp and paper: separate make-up lime from PCC requirements

Two paper-industry enquiries can need different approval evidence. Name the process before choosing the lime grade.

One industry, different lime enquiries

A request for “lime for a paper mill” leaves an important question unanswered: where will the material be used? The National Lime Association identifies lime’s role in Kraft causticizing and describes mill lime recovery, which creates demand for commercial make-up lime. It separately describes the manufacture of precipitated calcium carbonate, or PCC, by hydrating high-calcium quicklime and reacting the slurry with carbon dioxide.

Those processes provide context for a conversation with the mill. They do not mean that a single commercial grade has been approved for both applications.

Make-up lime: document the mill’s acceptance criteria

For make-up lime, ask the mill to state the process duty and the limits it uses for purchased material. A useful enquiry can identify required chemistry, accepted impurities, physical form and the tests used by the technical team. Include the receiving and preparation equipment so the supplier can respond to an actual material brief.

Compare the offered specification and analysis on the same reporting basis. If a reactivity result is part of approval, request its method and test conditions rather than comparing unexplained numbers.

PCC: distinguish a lime input from the finished pigment

A quicklime catalog is not a finished PCC specification. For a PCC-related enquiry, ask the producer to identify which input-material properties it controls and what evaluation is needed. Do not assume that a headline CaO figure guarantees the finished pigment’s brightness, particle distribution or performance in paper.

Hong Ha lists powder quicklime formats in its catalog. Format names help begin an enquiry, but the mill or PCC producer still needs to approve the actual offered grade.

Send the supplier a process-specific enquiry

  • State whether the requirement is Kraft make-up, PCC feedstock or another mill application.
  • Attach the approved material specification and test methods, if available.
  • Describe the feed system and required size or fineness.
  • Set out sample quantity, trial responsibilities and acceptance criteria.
  • Add estimated consumption, delivery pattern, packing and destination for the quotation.

This approach lets the purchasing and technical teams review the same requirement before committing to repeat supply.
