Quicklime storage: connect moisture protection with stock planning

Plan receiving, storage review and traceability without assuming one shelf life applies to every delivery.

Storage belongs in the purchasing brief

Graymont’s high-calcium quicklime SDS describes reaction with water and uptake of moisture and carbon dioxide. That general chemistry helps explain why delivery and storage arrangements matter to a quicklime purchase. The cited SDS is a third-party product document; request the current SDS for the material actually offered by your supplier.

There is no single storage duration established by this article. Ask the supplier and site team to agree conditions and any product-specific quality or retesting requirements.

Plan the quantity around real consumption

Give purchasing a realistic receiving and consumption schedule. A larger shipment may reduce delivery frequency while increasing inventory time. Evaluate that trade-off alongside the storage available and the plant’s material approval requirements.

Agree how bags or bulk deliveries will be identified and recorded. Stock rotation is easier to manage when each receipt can be linked to a delivery date, lot reference and analysis.

Questions for the receiving team

  • Has the proposed packing been reviewed for the route and storage arrangement?
  • Who checks delivery condition and records the material reference?
  • What happens if packaging is damaged or condition is uncertain?
  • Who authorizes use, retesting or rejection?
  • How will stock movements preserve lot traceability?

Have trained site personnel set the handling procedure using the offered product’s SDS and the installation’s requirements. This checklist does not replace that procedure or prescribe a response to a damaged consignment.

Keep claims and evidence separate

A photograph, catalog description or past COA cannot show the condition of material after an unknown storage period. Where there is doubt, document it and obtain a technical decision before use. Include the agreed responsibilities in the purchasing and receiving records.
