Start with the mineral-processing duty

The National Lime Association identifies quicklime and hydrated lime as materials used in the flotation or recovery of non-ferrous ores, including copper. It describes roles connected with flotation behaviour and circuit alkalinity. These are general industry applications, not proof that a particular lime grade will deliver a specified recovery rate at a mine.

A useful enquiry names the mineral circuit and the job the lime is expected to perform. The process engineer should define operating targets; a supplier quotation should not be used to invent them.

Explain how the material enters the plant

Tell the supplier whether the site receives quicklime for on-site preparation or needs hydrated lime for an existing system. Include the form and size the equipment accepts. Ask the plant team to identify any feed preparation, dosing or impurity constraints relevant to evaluation.

Two offers should be compared against the same material brief. An oxide assay, a hydroxide assay and a delivered price per tonne answer different questions and should not be treated as one combined performance measure.

Define the trial with the technical team

  • The circuit and intended addition point.
  • Required chemistry, assay basis and physical format.
  • Sampling, preparation and analytical methods.
  • The plant measurements used to judge a trial.
  • Approval responsibilities before repeat supply.

Keep trial records linked to the material tested. If ore characteristics or process conditions change, the technical team should review whether the earlier evaluation still applies. This article does not recommend a reagent dose, operating pH or process adjustment.

Then add the commercial brief

Once the technical scope is clear, specify trial and repeat quantities, packing, destination and timing. Ask for the current specification, relevant analysis and SDS. Share the receiving conditions so that the offer addresses practical delivery as well as the material name.
