Burnt dolomite and dead-burned dolomite: avoid a grade mismatch

Clarify calcination condition and end use before treating two dolomite descriptions as equivalent.

A shared mineral name does not define the offered grade

The National Lime Association distinguishes refractory doloma and dead-burned dolomite from other lime-related materials. Its explanation describes more severe firing conditions for refractory products than for ordinary lime manufacture. That is an important reason to clarify the required material rather than assuming that every product described as burnt dolomite can serve the same duty.

Translate the end use into a material requirement

Tell the supplier whether the material is intended as a metallurgical addition, a refractory manufacturing input or another defined application. Ask the responsible technical team to state the accepted calcination condition and supporting chemical and physical criteria. Avoid using a product photograph as evidence of density, firing history or durability.

Hong Ha’s catalog provides a burnt dolomite reference. It does not by itself establish that a particular offer is a dead-burned refractory grade. Request confirmation of the material actually available and the relevant specification before discussing substitution.

Separate the acceptance questions

  • Chemistry: separate calcium and magnesium requirements and any process-specific impurities.
  • Processing: the required material description and evidence relevant to its calcination condition.
  • Physical properties: size distribution and any density, reactivity or other tests required for the intended use.
  • Trial: sample identity, evaluation conditions and the buyer’s acceptance decision.

Use the test parameters the plant needs, rather than adding a generic list and assuming all entries are interchangeable. If the supplier cannot confirm a requirement, keep that gap visible in the evaluation.

Approve the grade before arranging the shipment

Agree the technical specification before finalizing quantity, packing and delivery. When a replacement is proposed, document exactly which requirement changes and who authorizes it. A successful purchase depends on matching the offered material to its duty, not on shortening several different grades to the word “dolomite”.
