Quicklime, hydrated lime or limestone? Start with the material

A practical terminology guide to help purchasing teams avoid requesting three different materials under one name.

Similar names, different materials

The National Lime Association distinguishes limestone from manufactured lime products. Quicklime results from calcination; hydrated lime is produced by adding water to quicklime under controlled conditions. These names should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions on a purchase order.

For a basic enquiry, identify whether the intended material is calcium carbonate, an oxide product or a hydroxide product. Then specify the physical form the receiving operation expects. The name alone does not establish the grade, fineness or acceptance limits.

Translate the requirement into a brief

Starting pointInformation to include
QuicklimeRequired oxide chemistry, particle-size range and process use.
Hydrated limeRequired hydroxide grade, fineness and intended application.
LimestoneConfirm that the process actually calls for uncalcined carbonate material.

Compare offers on one basis

Ask each supplier to identify the product using the same terminology. If a test result reports a different basis or method, request clarification before comparing the values. A higher-looking percentage does not by itself prove that a material is better suited to the process.

Add quantity, destination and packing preferences after the material definition is clear. This prevents a logistics discussion from getting ahead of the technical requirement. If you do not yet have a specification, describe the operation and ask which details need to be confirmed with the receiving plant.

Before ordering

Request the current specification and supporting analysis for the offered product. Any trial, sample or approval requirement should be agreed explicitly. General descriptions on a website are useful for orientation; the order should refer to the actual material being supplied.
