Steel demand outlook: a slower 2026, a cautious return to growth

An October update from worldsteel provides context for industrial planning, without turning a steel forecast into a lime demand forecast.

What the October release says

In its 12 October outlook, the World Steel Association projected global steel demand of 1,722 million tonnes in 2026, essentially flat against 2025. It forecast 1.7% growth in 2027, reaching 1,752 million tonnes. These are forward-looking estimates, rather than recorded production or confirmed orders.

Our editorial reading

A single global growth rate does not describe every customer or destination. For a mineral buyer, the useful next step is to connect a market outlook with the actual operating schedule of the receiving plant. A forecast for steel consumption does not establish a price, specification or shipment requirement for quicklime or burnt dolomite.

Keep a distinction between the material your process requires and the commercial assumptions used to plan its purchase. That makes it easier to compare quotations when delivery dates, volumes or freight arrangements change.

A practical enquiry checklist

  • Identify the process and required material grade.
  • State the expected quantity and delivery window.
  • Provide the destination port and preferred trade terms.
  • Ask how long the quotation remains valid.
  • Confirm the technical documents needed for approval.
